Mayoral Panel 1: localization of the SDGs through governance and inclusive planning in response to migration and refugees
The New York Declaration recognizes local authorities as among the most important actors of the response to migration and displacement, including the mainstreaming of migration and displacement response in local policy planning. The contributions of local-level migration and development perspective have also been underlined in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals in which cities are at the centre of ensuring safe, inclusive and sustainable living environments. However, so far, only 20% of local governments have been consulted on the SDGs.
This panel offers Turkish mayors an opportunity to highlight different response models applied by Turkish municipalities in welcoming migrants and refugees and their cooperation with international actors. The panel outlines how local authorities can act as catalysts to further operationalize humanitarian response – development nexus by identifying the ways localization of SDGs relates to migration and refugee response.
This panel is structured around the following questions: In a context of migration and displacement, how can local partners ensure realization of the SDGs and localize objectives around issues such as transparency, local service delivery and access to legal aid? How to ensure that local governance is inclusive for all layers of society, including migrants and refugees? What are the bottlenecks preventing further contribution of development approach to refugee and migration responses at the local level?
